Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a teenager when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was a student at the school located in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. However, she left school in the span of two years to pursue an acting career. Her path did not come without challenges. While in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed to do was abyssal. Her next job was as a "hat check" lady at a club but she quit and moved back to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a steady actor. She earned money by performing during the daytime in the ushering department. She received a master's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
